Since fans got their hands on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child two weeks ago, everyone’s undoubtedly come to realize Scorbus should’ve sailed.
I need to make my bias clear: I am a huge fan of Albus/Scorpius. In fact, I’ve never shipped a ship until Scorbus came along. I normally don’t dabble in the world of shipping, but this ship hits close to home for me.
Scorpius appears at the back of the stage. He looks at his friend talking to a girl — and part of him likes it and part of him doesn’t.
I’m a huge Harry Potter fan. I’m also hugely gay. And when I watched The Cursed Child on stage in early June, everything pointed toward “Albus and Scorpius are getting together.” I was thrilled that J.K. Rowling was about to introduce two prominent gay characters into canon.
Scorpius: You can’t what?
Albus: Just — we’ll be better off without each other, okay?
Scorpius is left looking up after him. Heartbroken.

… But then she didn’t. Despite all the hints of something deeper than friendship, despite all the chemistry, despite being such an outspoken supporter of LGBT equality and inclusion, J.K. Rowling decided that no, Scorbus was just a friendship and Harry Potter canon will still lack a prominent LGBT character. (I’m not counting Dumbledore, because that piece of canon was only introduced after the story ended.)
Delphi: Albus needs you, Scorpius. That’s a wonderful thing.
Scorpius: He needs me to do what?
Delphi: That’s the thing, isn’t it? About friendships. You don’t know what he needs. You only know he needs it. Find him, Scorpius. You two — you belong together.
It wouldn’t have been hard to make Scorbus real. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne didn’t have to change much about the play except for the very end, where the play yells “NoHomo!” by making Scorpius ask Rose — who appears very little in the play — to go on a date.
Albus: And it’s something I should have said a long time ago. In fact, you’re probably the best person I know. And you don’t — you couldn’t — hold me back. You make me stronger — and when Dad forced us apart — without you —
Scorpius: I didn’t much like my life without you in it either.
Instead, Scorpius should’ve asked Albus on a date, or as I suggest in my critically-acclaimed, X-rated fan-fiction, Scorpius should’ve grabbed Albus and pulled him in for a kiss. The Malfoy son has the courage to do it. It would’ve been perfect.
Snape: Listen to me, Scorpius. Think about Albus. You’re giving up your kingdom for Albus, right?
But don’t take my word for it. The internet noticed all of this too. And of course, Shipville, USA, a.k.a. Tumblr, has been all over Scorbus. Reading through the Scorbus tag has been a blast:
Some fans are rewriting the story
Mad respect for other authors
It just doesn’t add up
Some are making comparisons to Drarry
Some are acting like the NoHomo scene does not exist
Some are just creating beautiful Scorbus art
Sighhhh
