Sister Act 3 seems to have just found its director in none other than Tim Federle.
According to Deadline, Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) has reportedly signed on to serve as director on the highly anticipated third installment of the beloved Sister Act series.
Also involved behind the camera is Madhuri Shekar, who previously served as a writer on HBO’s The Nevers, and is set to pen the script for Sister Act 3.
On board to star is Whoopi Goldberg, who also spearheaded the cast of the first two movies.
The EGOT winner will once again be reprising her role as Deloris— a night club singer who finds herself put into witness protection and hiding out in a convent as a nun. Once there, she befriends the other sisters, and subsequently winds up reviving their church’s choir.
For now, it seems as though Goldberg is the only one from the original cast who’s attached to the threequel— but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll be the only alum who’ll be returning.
Speaking to James Corden on an interview during the Late Late Show in October 2020, Goldberg hinted that talks of getting “the gang together” were already happening behind the scenes.
“For a long time, they kept saying no one wanted to see it. And then, quite recently, it turns out that that may not be true,” Goldberg told Corden of the possibility of getting Sister Act 3 made at the time. “People might want to see it. So we’re working diligently to try and figure out how to get the gang together and come back.”
Still unknown is what the plot of Sister Act 3 will center on— but we’ll be excited to hear more details as the movie moves further and further into development!
