New Disney Channel movie ‘Descendants’ covers, ruins ‘Be Our Guest’

The new Disney Channel Original Movie The Descendants has been anticipated with skepticism for numerous reasons, and today we have another.

Disney Channel’s latest offering stars the offspring of the classic Disney villains including Maleficent, Jafar, Cruella de Vil, and Snow White’s Evil Queen as they try to assimilate with the offspring of the Disney heroes, led by Belle and the Beast’s son Prince Ben.

In this new clip, Prince Ben leads the school in a remix of the classic Beauty and the Beast song “Be Our Guest.” The performance is… not good. At all. It’s been turned into a hip-hop mess to appeal to the younger generations, we suppose, and it makes us cringe.

They shouldn’t have tried to cover a Disney classic. It was inevitable that it would turn out far from perfect!

Appropriately, the children of the Disney villains seem to find comfort in this “Be Our Guest” performance — they draw themselves closer to Prince Ben as he continues to sing. Of course the bad guys enjoy this bad version of the song!

Let’s hope the live-action Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens does a much, much better job with the recreations.

The Descendants airs July 31 at 8 p.m. on Disney Channel and stars Dove Cameron, Kristin Chenoweth, Mitchell Hope, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, Booboo Stewart, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jeffery. We’ll be watching because we’re still holding out hope that the plot is better than the songs and costumes.
