The forthcoming Disney Channel Original Movie The Descendants has revealed four of the villains’ children and they… don’t look how we expected.
In this first promotional photo from The Descendants we see (from left to right starting at the top) Jafar’s son Jay played by Booboo Stewart, Cruella de Vil’s son Carlos portrayed by Cameron Boyce, Maleficent’s daughter Mal played by Dove Cameron, and the Evil Queen’s daughter Evie played by new actress Sofia Carson.
Take a look:
We can’t say we’re in love with these outfits. They’re not what we envisioned for children of the villains, who always had such nice wardrobes. This is certainly a Disney Channel interpretation – geared towards younger, trendier television audiences – but we can’t help but feel like the costume designs are straight out of the 90s, which makes the movie already feel dated.
This preview makes us worried about what the parents will look like. Will Kristin Chenoweth, who’s playing Maleficent, also have this kind of look?
We’ll reserve further judgement until we see more from The Descendants which is directed by High School Musical helmer Kenny Ortega and set to premiere on Disney Channel next year.
An updated synopsis for The Descendants from Disney Channel reads, “Disney’s iconic characters are living out their happy endings in Auradon, a present day idyllic kingdom. All defeated villains have been exiled to the Isle of the Lost, a remote island where they must spend their remaining days isolated from Auradon’s modern-day luxuries. Time passes, and the teenage son of King Beast and Queen Belle is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making descendants of the villains stuck on the Isle of the Lost.”
“The teenaged kids of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella de Vil are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the teenage progeny of iconic Disney heroes. The villainous parents see this as an opportunity to use their children to carry out an evil plan that will finally free them all from the Isle of the Lost. Will these evil teens follow in the footsteps of their wicked parents?”
