Despite Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull positioning Shia LaBeouf as the franchise’s new lead, Mutt won’t reunite with Harrison Ford for Indy 5.
Steven Spielberg is directing, Harrison Ford is reprising the iconic role as Indiana Jones… but Shia LaBeouf won’t return as Indy’s secret son Mutt in the upcoming sequel.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the film’s screenwriter David Koepp (who also wrote Crystal Skull, and is responsible for The Mummy reboot script) confirms that LaBeouf won’t be back, adding that at the current stage of writing, “we’ve got a script we’re mostly happy with.”

There were a lot of, shall we say, issues with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and I don’t think Shia LaBeouf was the movie’s biggest problem. (Although his frank criticism of the movie post-release might have been conceived as such.)
However, Indiana Jones 5 looks like it will be markedly different from the previous in the series, partially by distancing itself from Crystal Skull — and hopefully its aliens — and partially because it’s the first Indy movie where the plot wasn’t conceived by George Lucas.
The untitled Indiana Jones movie will be directed by Steven Spielberg, and has a projected release date of July 10, 2020.
