The book to film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s excellent Ready Player One has cast actress Olivia Cooke as Art3mis, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Olivia Cooke is best known for her role in Bates Motel (her character Emma Decody is pictured above). She also starred in Me, Earl and the Dying Girl which opened in theaters over the summer.
Her character Art3mis is the love interest and competitor of Parzival (also known as Wade Watts). The two are competing to uncover a huge easter egg in the digital world of the OASIS. They eventually team up when other competitors — who are evil and have corporate interests in mind — get too close to the prize for comfort.
Since Art3mis is an avatar, presumably we won’t be seeing Cooke on screen much until the end.
The easter egg left by deceased OASIS creator James Halliday includes all of his wealth and control of the OASIS. In other words, a lot is at stake.
Art3mis and Parzival meet each other’s “real” selves by the end of the story. The latter notes his feelings for Art3mis to the reader throughout the book.
The Ready Player One novel has grown in popularity over the past couple of years thanks to Ernest Cline’s vivid storytelling. Steven Spielberg’s helming of the adaptation has certainly piqued everyone’s interest in the movie.
Filmmakers have yet to cast the role of Parzival, whose perspective the book is told from.
Cooke was previously up for a lead role in Star Wars: Episode VIII. With her involvement now off the table, one of the other two actresses vying for the role (Tatiana Maslany, Gina Rodriguez) may have a better shot.
Do you think Olivia Cooke is a good choice for Art3mis?
Ready Player One hits theaters December 15, 2017.
