Star Wars: Episode VIII has gained a shortlist of actresses being considered to star in the film, including Tatiana Maslany, Gina Rodriguez, and Olivia Cooke.
The Wrap reports that Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez, Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl star Olivia Cooke are the top contenders for the new female lead in director Rian Johnson’s upcoming Star Wars film.
While the report suggests that the casting is in the early stages, with the director still auditioning different actresses, these three are the top of the crop for now.

It’s also said that they’re doing “chemistry-reads” with The Force Awakens‘ star John Boyega, which is pretty interesting news. All three of these ladies would be excellent choices for the upcoming film, so it’s hard to decide who we’d rather see co-starring in the film. Regardless who’s selected, it sounds like this role will be an important one opposite Boyega’s new character Finn.
Earlier this year Tatiana was one of the actresses being considered for the first Star Wars spinoff Rogue One — the role eventually went to Felicity Jones.
Disney declined to comment on the report, which most likely means this shortlist is probably pretty close to who we should expect to be cast soon. We can’t wait to find out who will co-star in director Rian Johnson’s upcoming sequel.
Star Wars: Episode VIII will open in theaters May 26, 2017 under the direction of Rian Johnson (Looper, Breaking Bad). Meanwhile, Abrams’ The Force Awakens hits theaters this Christmas.
