Kevin Spacey in Burberry
K: Hit. He did not beat around the bush wearing a blue. Unlike Leo’s so-dark-it-look-black tux, this is such a gorgeous blue hue that should have all men looking to stock up on one similar to it for next season.
M: Hit. Even outside of my House of Cards obsession, there is something about Kevin Spacey. The man can wear a suit. I salute him for his bold colour choice, his bow tie, and his swagger.
Kristen Bell in Roberto Cavalli
K: Hit. She did say she picked this dress because of the distinct Frozen vibe it gave her, and we cannot disagree. The pattern is reminiscent of swirling snow and knowing our favorite Marshmallow had a burrito in her clutch makes this entire outfit that much better.
M: Hit. I wonder if Kristen Bell was trying to sway the Academy with her Frozen-esque dress. Still, everyone likes a themed outfit. The dress is gorgeous and Bell looks gorgeous in it – everyone is a winner.
Leonardo DiCaprio in Armani
K: Hit. Images couldn’t do it justice but if you watched the red carpet, you’d know this was not a plain black tux. He just looks so demure. I wish he won.
M: Miss. I can hear the internet yelling at me already, but can someone please tell Leo that he is not Jack Nicholson? It’s time for a new hairstyle. Shake things up, Leo.
Liza Minnelli in Halston
K: Miss. I don’t like pant suits that much and I like them even less when they’re this violently blue and silky.
M: Hit. Liza can wear anything that she likes and it will be a winner. Although, this would not be a hit on anyone but Liza. And even if a bright blue, draped, off-the-shoulder pantsuit isn’t your thing, surely we can all appreciate Liza’s dedication to a look, as seen in that blue hair streak.
Lupita Nyong’o in Prada
K: Hit. I don’t even know where to begin. Every time I see this, I just yell “LUPITA” because she is so freaking gorgeous. We all have seen her dominate the red carpet this season and I think she’s going out on top. I’m also coveting her earrings, hard-core. My one critique about this is that it is maybe too low cut? No – nope – this is perfect.
M: Hit. This might be my favourite dress of the night. Lupita Nyong’o has been absolutely knocking it out of the park this awards season, and this dress is no exception. Her choice of colour is sensational with her skin, and the simplicity of the silhouette lets Lupita shine.
Portia De Rossi in Naeem Khan
K: Miss. It looks pleasant enough, but why wear this strange geometric cut-out/crocheted number? Her waist is just begging for a statement belt.
M: Miss. I can’t quite explain why I don’t like this dress. Portia De Rossi looks striking, and the cutaway gown is a marvel of design. But the overall effect is too casual for me, and I would have liked to see her in color.
Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen
K: Hit. To me there is almost too much fabric at the train, but the body of this dress does wonders for the overall look. I think her hair nicely balances the knot at her hip and overall, it’s a very sophisticated look.
M: Miss. I like everything about this look except for the fabric, and unfortunately there is so much fabric here that that makes all the difference. I like the glamourous hair, the silhouette, the understated jewelry. But the fabric is so shiny that I can look at nothing else, and it makes all of the draping far too prominent.
