Jared Leto in Saint Laurent
K: Hit. Jared Leto’s hair absolutely owned the red carpet. Men and women alike seem to be in envy of this musician/Oscar winner’s amazing mane. Beyond that, I love the white tux despite critics comparing him to a waiter for the night. The red bow tie was just the right accessory to top off the look.
M: Hit. Ellen was not wrong when she said Jared Leto was the prettiest person at the Oscars. Part of me wants to hate him, because his hair always looks better than mine. But his suit is so well tailored, and the pop of colour on his bow tie is perfect, and he brought his mum as his date, so I have to love him.
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior
K: Hit. This is so much better than the dress she wore earlier in the season that could be easily replicated with a sheet and some black belts. I love the backwards necklace and of course, that red dress. If you know me, you know a red structured dress like that is my kryptonite. Her hair was fine for what it is – as it grows out again I expect we can see more back-swept looks like this.
M: Hit. Poor Jennifer Lawrence might have bad luck remaining upright at awards shows, but girl can put a look together. The colour popped out immediately, and it is so perfectly tailored for her figure. The miniature peplums add interest, and I love that she has kept the styling simple. If only Katniss could see her now.
Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta
K: Hit. It’s so sparkly and pretty! It doesn’t hang like a ill-fitting fringe dress but rather looks more demure than I’d expect. But where was Ben?
M: Hit. So there is the possibility that someone might mistaken her for a chandelier, or an extra on The Great Gatsby, but I adore this. The dress is glamourous, flirty and fun, and she has cleverly kept the hair and makeup nice and simple.
Julia Roberts in Givenchy Couture
K: Miss. The strange black lace just wasn’t working for me. It wasn’t to the standards we’ve seen from her in the past, but then again, she did have the confusing black/white thing at the Golden Globes – she just isn’t having winning award seasons style.
M: Miss. It pains me to criticise Julia Roberts, so I’ll keep my criticisms to the dress. In particular, the lace detailing on the top looks like an attempt as a high class modesty panel, while the peplum just confuses the rest of the dress.
Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace
K: Hit. I love it. I love that it has the intention of being a cap dress at her shoulders but doesn’t completely go there.
M: Hit. I love this dress from the front, I don’t mind it from the back. This looks like Hudson’s attempt at an American Hustle costume, and it looks fantastic on her. She is sleek, unique, and sexy.
Kelly Osbourne in Badgley Mischka
K: Hit. I saw this on the runway a season or so ago and went insane for it then, and I was going bonkers for it here. This was one of her two dresses tonight but I wish she simply stayed in this the entire time. The dress looks phenomenal on her and the golden overlay at the top is just enough to make this not look like a wedding dress.
M: Hit. First, I’ll admit that I miss Osbourne’s fabulously bold purple hair from the Grammys, as it seems somewhat diluted here. The dress is still fabulous and very fresh, the silhouette is simple and the detailed top keeps it interesting.
Kerry Washington in Jason Wu
K: Miss. Olivia Wilde went for a form-fitting black gown to accentuate her baby bump and while I’m not saying Kerry is trying to hid it, this eggplant, ill-fitting dress is a very unfavorable look for me. I look forward to seeing more creme, white, and grey coats and peplums from her on Scandal as they try to hide her growing bump. (Unless they work it into the show, but at this point that seems unlikely.)
M: Hit. I am so torn, because I adore Kerry Washington. Again, she looks amazing regardless of what she wears – but she could have chosen something more exciting than this. Ordinarily this would be a miss, because the dress is so incredibly dull, but her hair and makeup are glorious and she is absolutely glowing. So she gets the hit for looking amazing, regardless of what I think of her outfit.
