For the second time, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that new Nintendo Switch models are afoot.
In the previous WSJ report, the paper reported the new Switch model will “likely share many features with the current version and be compatible with existing Switch game software.” Now, the WSJ is going further by claiming that Nintendo is developing multiple Switch models.
According to the WSJ, the new Nintendo Switch models will focus on two types of Nintendo video game consumers: those that purchased the Nintendo 2DS and 3DS.
The major differences between the 2DS and the traditional 3DS are as follows: a more kid-friendly sturdiness, a lack of a clamshell screen, and the removal of the eye-damaging 3D effects on certain games. The New Nintendo 3DS has a stronger processor than the vanilla 3DS, a second analog nub, a longer battery life, and larger screens.
Taking this all into consideration, the new Switch models might fall into two separate categories: one being a more budget-friendly Switch, and the other being a more souped-up version of the original.
WSJ says that the “2DS” Switch model will lack features such as the ability to dock the console for television connectivity and the rumble feature of the Joy-Cons.
This would be quite the nail in the coffin for the 3DS line, with the dual-screened handheld releasing its first model in early 2011. That’s eight years for the 3DS line, which is not unheard of for Nintendo; but it may just be that Nintendo is finally bringing the pocket-sized gaming console out to pasture.
The Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017 and hasn’t had an upgrade since. The handheld/home console hybrid has seen great commercial success with titles such as Pokémon: Let’s Go, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Upcoming titles for Nintendo’s Switch console include a new Animal Crossing, Pokémon Sword and Shield, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Remake, and Luigi’s Mansion 3.
