The Cruel Intentions TV show was set 16 years after the movie, featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Kathryn and the grown-up son of Annette and Sebastian.
Sadly, this reboot of a remake of an adaptation was not to be, as NBC has chosen to pass on the promising project.
Via TV Line, “Though the pilot was well-received, we hear there are simply too many shows on the network’s midseason roster to keep Cruel Intentions on hold.”
In the 1999 movie, Sebastian was a typical rich kid, who agreed to seduce Annette in return for Kathryn letting him into her bed. But he fell in love with the innocent girl, going against his step-sister’s wishes and even exposing her dark secrets. Unfortunately, Sebastian passed away, leaving Annette heartbroken but ultimately optimistic about her future.
The spin-off series, created by original writer-director Roger Kumble, gets a little creative with the movie’s ending, imagining that Annette (Reese Witherspoon) had become pregnant with Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe)’s child before he died.

Now played by Kate Levering, the pilot episode sees Annette and her 16-year-old son Bash Casey reunite with Sebastian’s stepsister Kathryn. Sarah Michelle Gellar was set to reprise her role, and seemed very excited about it.
Although NBC has passed on Cruel Intentions, all hope isn’t lost yet: Sony Pictures TV, which is producing the show, is still hoping another distributor will pick up the project.
We’ll have to see if another network or streaming service bites. Perhaps Hulu would prove a good fit for the show, which sounds like a mix between Gossip Girl and The Good Wife.
