Have you seen the new Ghostbusters movie and want to know more about what that after credits scene meant? You’re in luck!
This is your last chance to jump ship if you don’t want any Ghostbusters after-credits spoilers. You’ve been warned.
‘Ghostbusters’ after-credits scene details
At the end of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (read our review!), we see Abby, Erin, Patty, and Holtzman working on their ghost catching tech and combing through some of their gathered evidence. They’ve probably got a ton at this point, considering all of New York City was taken over by a horde of angry spirits.
Patty is fiddling with a recorder when she makes a curious sound. The others look up and ask her if she’s gotten something. She rewinds and replays the tape a few more times, and then asks, “What is Zuul?”
The ladies may have shrugged in confusion and disinterest, but the audience members in my theatre were certainly much more enthusiastic about what this could possibly mean.
Zuul, you may or may not remember, is the Gatekeeper of Gozer and sort of kicked off this whole Ghostbusters thing. Dana Barret (Sigourney Weaver) was being haunted by its spirit and it subsequently possessed her. Zuul was waiting on The Keymaster, and together they would bring forth Gozer the Destructor. Three guesses what his goal in life was.
The Ghostbusters 2016 after credits scene drops the name without any followup, meaning we really don’t know if this was a nod to the original franchise or if Director Paul Feig is already considering a sequel with the Gatekeeper at its center.
Considering there has been a fair amount of controversy surrounding Ghostbusters, it’s unclear if rehashing an older plot line such as this would be a good idea. However, if the team decides to take it in a vastly different direction, it would certainly be a cool way to reference the original Ghostbusters and explore more of the mythology around Gozer.
Do you want to see Zuul pop up in a ‘Ghostbusters’ sequel in light of the after credits scene?
