This seems like a joke, but the Frozen directors actually have no plans to continue the franchise after Frozen Fever.
Frozen is a phenomenon. Since its release in 2013, the popularity of Anna and Elsa has surpassed anything Disney has ever seen before; the Frozen Fever short film debuting on Friday is wildly anticipated all over the world.
There’s both a Frozen on Ice and a Frozen Broadway musical in development. The ABC series Once Upon a Time has already given the characters a live-action makeover.

Whether or not you’re a fan, Frozen 2 has seemed like an inevitability, a logical way for Disney to cash in on the movie’s success.
And yet, once again, the directors have reminded us that there are still no plans for a sequel.
Speaking to Buzzfeed, Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck emphasized that unless the story is right, they will not return to the franchise.
“It all comes down to the story,” Lee insists. “Like with the short, it was so daunting until we found the story. Then it was all of the things it usually is and we were thinking of every emotion, and moment, and feeling… Until we find our way into what’s next emotionally, it will feel too big.”

The directors might also consider branching out and exploring other stories, considering that their Frozen clout has probably opened a lot of doors.
Of course, Disney might not need Lee and Buck to continue the story. But that all comes down to contract negotiations and trademark ownership.
We almost can’t imagine that Frozen Fever will really be the swan song for Anna and Elsa. But if they wait much longer, maybe it really will be too late.
