After Tangled, everyone was excited about the sequel, so what happened? Here’s what you need to know about Tangled 2 and Tangled: The Series.
They actually did make a sequel! You just didn’t get to see it in theaters. In March 2017, Disney Channel released an animated movie that officially serves as Tangled 2. Don’t laugh! Voice stars Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore returned to reprise their roles, and they’re now starring in an animated TV series.
Check out a preview of Tangled 2, titled Tangled: Before Ever After (since it technically takes play before the short film Tangled Ever After), below:
With a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Tangled (2010) is generally counted among the top “modern” Disney animations. Rather than making a sequel (as Disney does with most of its films, for better or worse), the studio moved on to Brave and Frozen.
Den of Geek previously uncovered the simple reason why there were no plans for a Tangled 2 for a while.
‘Tangled 2’: Where did it go?
Prior to the 2017 TV movie, questions about a Tangled sequel were up in the air. During an interview about Disney’s Big Hero 6, producer Roy Conli (who also worked on Tangled) said that while, “There was a desire to somehow take it into a filmic sequel,” directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard “weren’t really interested” in continuing the story.
In 2012, Disney released the six minute short Tangled Ever After, directed by Greno and Howard, with Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi reprising their roles as Rapunzel and Flynn.
We imagine that Conli didn’t think to bring this up in the interview because he did not return to produce the short, and it doesn’t really count as a proper sequel. Disney probably saw it more as a consolation prize for fans of the movie hoping for more.
Another reason Disney wasn’t interested in taking Rapunzel’s story further, Conli explained, is that, “her hair was gone!”
In the first movie, Rapunzel loses her hair when Flynn Rider cuts it off, and she is left with short, dark hair rather than her iconic long blonde curtain of magical locks.
Tangled 2, of course, gives Rapunzel her hair back. The Tangled sequel and subsequent TV series are popular — Disney renewed it for a second season before the series premiere, and the show still stars Levi and Moore in their beloved roles.
Might another Tangled one day hit theaters? We all know that Disney loves creating sequels to their most beloved franchises, so it seems possible. Perhaps they could one day bring another Tangled story to Disney+, their new streaming app.
‘Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure’
Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, also known as Tangled: The Series, airs on Disney Channel. After Tangled: Before Ever After aired as a Disney Channel Original Movie, the series episodes began to air on March 24, 2017.
