The CW’s Black Lighting is gearing up to give birth to a brand new Painkiller spinoff.
According to Deadline, The CW is in the process of developing a spinoff pilot for the Black Lightning character, Painkiller.
Currently, the plan is for the the spinoff’s pilot episode to air as an episode of Black Lightnight’s upcoming fourth season.
Specifically, fans can look forward to checking out the backdoor pilot, which will air as Black Lightning’s seventh episode of its forthcoming season.
Black Lightning’s showrunner Salim Akil is on board to both write and direct the pilot episode for the spinoff series, which finds actor Jordan Calloway reprising his role as the titular character.
Calloway has portrayed Painkiller (also known as Khalil Payne) on the superhero series since its inception, recurring in season 1 before later going on to become a series regular in season 2.
For the uninitiated, Khalil Payne is a guilt ridden character who lives with the regret of the havoc he wreaked in his former life out in Freeland City where he was known as Painkiller— a super-enhanced killing machine and known member of Tobias Whale’s gang.
In an attempt to bury his past and move on, Khalil settles in a new city called Akashic Valley. It won’t be easy for Khalil to run from his past though.
As the official synopsis for the series teases, “As his violent, destructive history crashes his idyllic new beginning, Khalil is thrusted back into action with a new mission — bring justice where he once gave out punishment — but to do that, he will first have to deal with and harness his darker side, Painkiller.”
Black Lightning season 4 kicks off via The CW on Monday, February 8. The Painkiller backdoor pilot will serve as the series’ episode 7.
