We’ve lost two families over the course of four seasons on Fear the Walking Dead, so it’s about time we made our own.
We started Fear the Walking Dead with two families: the Clarks and the Manawas. One by one each member of both families was killed off, save Alicia who’s still going strong, if a bit broken.
But as we know from The Walking Dead, family isn’t just a bond from blood. You can choose your family. As executive producer Andrew Chambliss said:
“What this kind of speaks to with us is one of the themes of the back half of the show. This is a show about all these disparate characters who were very separate at the beginning of the season, but who all slowly are starting to come together, and really are characters who are in search of a family… People can come together in any way, and really form those bonds of love, of camaraderie, of strength, and form a new family.”
“Close Your Eyes” was a great bottle episode to start these budding new families with Alicia and Charlie. Two characters with tense history forced together for a full hour made for an engaging character driven story.
Fear the Walking Dead has so many interesting characters though, so here are seven pairings we’d love to see have full episodes dedicated to.
John and Charlie
Poor Charlie has had it rough since the apocalypse hit. After witnessing her parents’ death, she was adopted to the Vulture family who weren’t the best influence. Even still, at the very least they taught her a way to survive that toughened her up.

That said, she’s still a child, and a little more tenderness with the toughness wouldn’t be amiss. John Dorie has the perfect balance of teddy bear and grizzly bear.
Not to mention, we’ve already seen John and Charlie interact. To one one’s surprise, John is great with kids. A day, and episode, for the two of them to bond would be adorable. Imagine John teaching Charlie the proper way to hold and fire a gun, like a dad teaching his kid to play baseball, just a little more violent.
Daniel and Jim
Poor Jim isn’t quite cut out for this new world. At least, not yet. He’s been hiding out in a brewery all this time, avoiding reality and hoping it’ll all go back to normal sooner than later. Clearly Jim is in need of a reality check, and Daniel is the best man for the job.
Daniel is made for this new world with his skillsets and mentality. His no-nonsense attitude would be perfect for Jim. There are two ways this could work brilliantly:
1) It’s plausible Jim is the type of person who would make excuses for himself, too meek to toughen up himself, always dependent on others. In comes Daniel, unwilling to accept Jim’s inadequacies, forcing him to learn the ways of the world through whatever means.
2) Put Daniel and Jim in a situation where they’re forced together for an episode would be endlessly entertaining. Jim, knowing how ill-equipped he is for the outside, decides he wants Daniel to help him, but Daniel has little patience for someone as weak, and annoying, as Jim. But they’re stuck together, so Daniel reluctantly agreed to help, under his own rules and conditions of course.
Alicia and Alex
Alicia just needs someone similar to her to travel with for a little bit, someone who gets her. She’s been through enough, it’s time she had a break to do what she wants with someone who wants the same. Alicia’s partner should be a badass who has some sensitivity, just like her. Someone who fits that is Alex.
One episode with Alicia and Alex embarking on some mission would be so satisfying. How often do we get to see a pair who actually know what they’re doing in high-stress situations, and don’t make foolish mistakes? Maybe they go off in search of food, and suddenly the situation turns dire, as it typically does. Watching these two problem solve in a life or death situation would be amazing.
Morgan and Tobias
A spinoff episode with two original members of both shows’ pilots certainly has a ring of poetry to it.
Poor Tobias knew the end was coming yet nobody Madison believed him. Despite his wise intuition, he was still a scared boy. We don’t know what’s become of him, whether he’s some alpha warrior leading a pack of likeminded survivors, or if he’s holed up somewhere peeing his pants day after day. Either way, he’s the type of person who would relish being in the presence of someone like Morgan.

Tobias would look to Morgan as a mentor figure, someone to aspire to be. Regardless of whether Morgan’s custom is ‘kill everything on sight’ or ‘nothing must be harmed,’ Tobias would go along with anything. He’d be far too in awe of Morgan’s prowess and demeanor that he’d follow whatever strict code of living Morgan wants to teach.
Hopefully this time a goat won’t die though.
June and Diana
June is a fairly closed book, which is off-putting to other characters and it leaves her without many friends, if any. What she needs is someone with patience who she’ll eventually open up to. But we don’t have time for that. The next best thing is for her to spend some time with someone who doesn’t care about her past, won’t ask too many questions, and can match her intensity.
Diana may have only been on Fear the Walking Dead for a couple of episodes, but she left an impression. Her time with Alicia easily endeared us to her. June and Diana are both tough women, and can match each other stride for stride. Sending the two of them out on a mission together for an episode may not be the most heartfelt episode, but it would be the most badass.
Strand and Luciana
Having both lost people they cared deeply about, Victor and Luci have each spiralled into an unhealthy state of mind. With everyone else of their group off doing their own thing, and in some cases coping in their own way, Luci and Victor have been left to themselves, with each other.
We haven’t had much of an opportunity to see these two characters interact, so why not now? Let’s have an episode dedicated to these two, watching them deal with their grief, and confide in someone they normally wouldn’t. It would be interesting to see the effect these two very different people would have on each other, and how they alleviate their own pain by helping the other.
The twins and Althea
In all honesty, all we really want to see is an episode dedicated to Wendell and Sarah. They made an impression within one episode with their natural, dynamic chemistry, and now we just want to know more. Obviously the person to get that backstory is Althea.
Once Althea meets the twins, she’s bound to sit them down and ask them their story for her records. True, as an interviewer, Althea wouldn’t be interacting with them very much to build a bond. It would be less a personal connection due to her interrogation style. But at this point, we just want to know as much as we can about Wendell and Sarah, so it’s okay if Al is more of a segue to get something, rather than directly involved herself.
