Star Wars: The Last Jedi is poised to reveal Rey’s parentage. Apparently, Rian Johnson was free to decide, but chose the same parents for her as J.J. Abrams.
Perhaps the biggest question surrounding the new Star Wars trilogy is who Rey’s parents are.
Is Luke her dad? Is it Obi-Wan Kenobi? Or someone from the extended universe?

It seems likely that we’ll learn the answer in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Surprisingly, the reveal was not necessarily going to reflect J.J. Abrams’ original decision (which informed the plot of The Force Awakens and Ridley’s performance).
When taking over the reins, Rian Johnson apparently had free rein to come up with his own answer, according to Rolling Stone (via Collider).
Lucky for fans who care about continuity, however, it turns out that Johnson — on his own — came up with the same answer as the one Abrams had originally envisioned.
Says Johnson, “I wasn’t given any directive as to what that had to be. I was never given the information that she is this or she is that.”
Although of course it’s good that Lucasfilm gives directors the freedom to take the story where it organically needs to go, but I’m personally glad they arrived at the same answer. It’ll be much more rewarding to rewatch the trilogy post-completion knowing that the first episode hinted at reveals to come in the second and third.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
