Disney is giving flight to yet another live-action movie based on one of their animated classics: Here comes a live-action Aladdin!
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Disney has hired The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and two-time Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie to helm their live-action Aladdin, which is being described as an “ambitious and non-traditional take.” The film will be a musical and is expected to have Ritchie’s “signature non-linear touch.”
Deadline adds that “the hope is to start a new franchise here.”
Last year we heard Disney was interested in creating an Aladdin spinoff focusing more on the Genie, but today’s news seems to suggest that they’re jumping straight to a reimagining of the 1992 classic.
Perhaps a Genie movie is still to come. There’s no doubt that the character could carry a film on his own (though moviegoers would surely be hesitant of someone replacing the late Robin Williams).
Disney’s been very busy lining up live-action reboots of their animated classics in recent years. Just last week we learned that Jon Faverau was hired to helm a reimagining of The Lion King. Next year they’ll release a live-action Beauty and the Beast from director Bill Condon, and in 2018 we’ll get a new Mulan.
Those aren’t the only ’90s classics in development again. Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda is involved in a new Little Mermaid.
