Director, writer, and actor Harold Ramis has died due to complications from an autoimmune disease at the age of 69.
Harold Ramis has had a great career as an actor, but what he may be most respected for was being the man behind the camera of friend and actor Bill Murray’s biggest films.
Ramis is famous for his writing and directing work on blockbusters such as Caddyshack, Groundhog Day and Ghostbusters. Some of his other comedy credits include National Lampoon’s Animal House, Stripes and Analyze This starring Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal.
Prior to his film career taking off, Ramis was a comedic performer and the lead writer on Second City’s television series Second City Television. He became a legend in the city of Chicago and in recent years had directed episodes of NBC’s The Office.
Director Judd Apatow has said that his career as a comedy director and writer was sparked by some of the works of Ramis, so Ramis will undoubtedly be sorely missed by some of Hollywood’s funniest writers and directors.
Ramis died at 12:53 a.m. from complications relating to autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis. It is somewhat of a rare disease that can result in the swelling of blood vessels, causing kidney and heart failure.
The actor was reportedly in discussions concerning Ghostbusters 3 with his friend and writing partner Dan Aykroyd, as well as the other original stars including Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver.
Ramis’ work will forever live on as some of the funniest films to make it on the big screen. We send our deepest condolences to the beloved actor’s family and friends.
