Ghostbusters 3 might someday make it to the big screen and long time fans can take comfort in knowing that original star, Rick Moranis wouldn’t be opposed to reprising his role.
Ghostbusters 3 has long been in development, mostly by Dan Aykroyd, who seems determined to get the band back together. So far, though, the proverbial ball has yet to actually begin rolling. Akroyd has a script, or at least a first draft of one, and insists production is set to begin soon.
Rick Moranis (pictured below), who played uber-nerd and sometimes ghostbuster, Louis Tully sat down with Empire to talk about the possibility of joining the third installment of the 80s classic. While he didn’t confirm that he would return, he did say he wouldn’t not return.
Moranis told the mag that Aykroyd’s team contacted him about returning and his response was, “I wouldn’t not do it, but it’s got to be good. You know, I’m not interested in doing anything I’ve already done, and I thought the second one was a disappointment.”
While his opinion on Ghostbusters 2 kind of hurts our feelings, we will choose to focus on the fact that there is a chance we will see Moranis back on the big screen.
When asked what new places he hopes his character would be taken to, Moranis said,”I sort of see him as being Bernie Madoff’s cellmate in jail. Both of them being so orderly that they race to get up and make their beds.”
There have been rumors about original stars Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Harold Ramis reprising their roles. One thing Aykroyd confirmed earlier this year is that Bill Murray has made it clear that he’s not the ghostbuster to call on this one.
Aykroyd told Larry King in May, “[Murray’s] a good friend, I love him, he just doesn’t want to reprise the role. However, there will be a hole for him. If Billy wants to walk in the door and be in the movie, we will find a place.”
While we’re all hoping Murray changes his mind and Moranis and the rest of the crew go from “rumored” to “confirmed,” Aykroyd told Larry King that fans should expect a new story with new players. “Ghostbusters 3 will feature a new cast of Busters. We’re going to have to cast. We need four new ghostbusters. We need four new Columbia students,” he said.
The full Moranis interview is in the latest issue of Empire (the one with those new Desolation of Smaug pictures!) which hits newsstands June 27.
Thanks, Empire
