The CW’s trippy new drama series Cult was just finding its groove – but now it looks like it might not even make it through its first year.
Cult fans (the real ones – not the ones in the show. You know what we mean) knew something bad was happening when on February 28, following a number of poorly rated episodes, the freshman drama was moved to Friday nights.
Friday night is commonly known as the timeslot where television series go to die – although of course Fox’s ratings-challenged Fringe managed to stick it out there for a while.
But now, Zap2It is reporting that The CW has not only dropped Cult from its schedule, but might not even be airing the second half of the season!
Cult, starring Matt Davis, Alona Tal, Robert Knepper and Jessica Lucas, was only seven episodes in when The CW decided to pull the plug, but considering they actually filmed a full 13-episode season, we’ll have to hold out hope that if nothing else, the final six episodes might be released on the network’s website.
With all the new pilots The CW has lined up, we can expect a number of cuts this year. Luckily for fans, The CW has already announced the renewal of The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and Arrow, and the network also seems likely to renew Beauty & the Beast (although nothing is official yet, and it could still go either way).
Meanwhile, things aren’t looking good for The Carrie Diaries, and we’re also worried about Hart of Dixie. There hasn’t yet been word on Nikita, although a season 4 renewal seems likely at this point – if for nothing else, then to bump it past 100 episodes and into syndication.
We’re sad to see Cult go this soon, as it is an ambitious show which seems like it has a lot of potential.
But the good news for fans of The Vampire Diaries, of course, is that this could potentially open up for the return of Matt Davis as Alaric Saltzman! Sure, the character was killed off last year, but considering the recent spoiler about another returning character, anything is possible.
And considering the actor was recently spotted on set, perhaps his return will come sooner than we think!
What do you think about the cancellation of Cult? Have you been enjoying the first season?
