The long awaited Wicked movie adaptation has found its director in Jon M. Chu.
According to Deadline, director Jon M. Chu has officially signed on to helm Universal’s highly anticipated big screen adaptation of the Broadway hit musical, Wicked.
Fans of the Tony Award winning musical who’ve been keeping tabs on the adaptation will likely know that a movie has been in the works for quite some time. In fact, the film has been gestating over at Universal for over a decade.
The Crazy Rich Asians vet takes over directing duties on the project from Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot). Daldry, in turn, took his leave from the Wicked movie due to scheduling conflicts last October.
As for Chu, he’s certainly no stranger to directing highly anticipated musical adaptations. In fact, most recently, the director spearheaded the much anticipated movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights over at Warner Brothers.
Jon M. Chu took to Twitter shortly after news broke of his involvement with the Wicked movie to share his excitement with fans far and wide.
The director tweeted out a few lines from “Defying Gravity” in addition to asking, “So…Twitterverse, who should we cast?”
“Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap…”#WickedMovie @UniversalPics #StephenSchwartz #WinnieHolzman #MarcPlatt it’s time.

“Most of my life I have felt out of place, weird and different. I hid behind my camera because people liked to be filmed and I could disappear,” wrote Chu in a lengthy text post. “But when I saw Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s Wicked over 15 years ago as it was being workshopped in San Francisco I couldn’t unsee it.”
“So to think that I have been invited to bring this timeless story to the biggest screens all around the world for people to experience with their family, best friends and total strangers… of all walks of life, ages, shapes and colors is like I’ve been invited to Oz by the Wizard himself.”
Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect to see Wicked hit the big screen.
