Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera’s What If It’s Us has yet to hit store shelves, but the highly anticipated queer love story has already been optioned for film.
According to Variety, Anonymous Content has officially scored the rights to forthcoming young adult novel, What If It’s Us. The production company will be working with 13 Reasons Why creator Brian Yorkey to bring the book to the big screen.
It’s great news for fans of the book’s authors, both of whom have found success with their respective previous novels. Prior to teaming up with Albertalli, Silvera penned 2017’s They Both Die at the End, a book about two strangers who meet on the last day of their lives and set out to have one last great adventure together.
Also joining the team behind the scenes are Anonymous Content’s Joy Gorman Wettels, who also worked with Yorkey on 13 Reasons Why, and executive producer Kat Ramsburg.
Both Albertalli and Silvera will also serve as producers on the adaptation. The authors issued a joint statement in regards to the good news.
“The universe couldn’t have presented a more perfect dream team than Brian [Yorkey], Joy [Gorman Wettels], and Kat [Ramsburg]. We immediately fell in love with their vision for this film, and we can’t wait to watch them bring What If It’s Us to life,” said Albertalli and Silvera.
Set in summer in New York City, the forthcoming novel tells the story of two boys named Arthur and Ben who can’t decide if the universe is pushing them together or pulling them apart.
Read the full synopsis for the book below:
“ARTHUR is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.
BEN thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.
But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them . . . ?
Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.
Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.
But what if they can’t nail a first date even after three do-overs?
What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?
What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?
But what if it is?
What if it’s us?”
What If It’s Us is scheduled to be released on Oct. 9, 2018.
