The 2015 Golden Globe winners are in the books, with quite a few surprises, but what does it tell us as we head towards the Oscars?
This Thursday, January 15, the 2015 Oscar nominations for all 24 categories will be unveiled live on television. This is the first time that the show has revealed all the categories with a televised event.
Now that we know when and how the Academy Award nominees will be announced, we take a look at what the Golden Globe winners mean for potential Oscar nominees. Every year there’s quite a bit of crossover between the two award ceremonies, and this year we don’t expect anything different.
Boyhood ended up taking home the big prize, winning Best Drama, at the end of the night. The film which was shot over a 12-year period won the hearts and votes of the voters and rightfully so. While watching the film recently, it not only has some impeccable performances, but the sheer achievement of successfully shooting a film over 12 years is beyond impressive.
Best Picture will be a gauntlet this year, with some incredibly stellar films hitting theaters in 2014, but Boyhood has proven that it’s currently in the minds and hearts of Academy voters, and we can’t imagine that will suddenly stop as we approach the Oscars.
Richard Linklater also won Best Director for Boyhood, and as mentioned previously, a lot of this is due to the fact that he was capable of keeping the entire cast together and focused over a 12-year shoot. Linklater thanked the man behind the funding each year, and one could tell that this was a collaboration that Hollywood may have never seen before. He deserved this win, and his film deserved it even more.
Boyhood picked up another big award with Patricia Arquette winning Best Supporting Actress last night during the Globes. Oddly enough, no one seemed to give Ethan Hawke a chance at winning, but he too put in a great performance in the unique film about a young boy making his way through childhood while he dodges some gritty, real-life obstacles.
Does this mean that Boyhood and its cast and crew will be a lock to win, or even get nominated for an Oscar? We won’t know until the nominees are announced on Thursday, but it certainly helps that they’re getting free press from their multiple wins at the Golden Globes.
Despite Foxcatcher not winning any Golden Globes, we expect more Oscar voters to see this film as an incredibly well shot dark drama worthy of recognition. Even if it doesn’t win Best Picture, we could see Steve Carell receiving a Best Actor nomination for his role as John du Pont, the wealthy recluse who dreamt of building a world class wrestling facility before a bizarre murder tragically ended everything.
While The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, was snubbed entirely at the Golden Globes, we can’t imagine that will happen at the Oscars. This is an excellent film, and despite its flaws, it’s one of the best looking films of the year, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance as Alan Turing, one of the few mathematicians who broke the german enigma, is remarkable.
His story is beyond incredible, albeit bleak, and it’s one that all moviegoers should know. We hope to see Cumberbatch or the film’s writers/directors with an Oscar by the end of the night.
The Theory of Everything, starring Eddie Redmayne, received a big win last night for Best Actor, Drama. This was a huge surprise, but not because of his lack of talent. The film has flown under the radar a bit during awards season, but he’s now undoubtedly in the spotlight. The film may not end up with Best Picture, but Redmayne will be in contention for an Oscar, and possibly his co-star Felicity Jones as well.
Selma has just hit theaters last week, so we’re giving fans a bit to get a chance to see the film, but from what we hear it’s also one of this year’s more remarkable films. When Oprah is in your film, you’re bound to get a little boost. But her involvement isn’t the only thing going for it, and the film itself picked up one Golden Globe for Best Original Song. A unique win, but it will keep the film in the minds of voters as we head towards the Oscars.
This could be an upset film, so we’ll be looking closely as we find out the 2015 Academy Award nominees this Thursday.
Julianne Moore won Best Actress at the Globes for her unbelievable role in Still Alice. She’s been a favorite to win for quite some time, and this will undoubtedly bleed into the Oscar nominees. She has a great chance of repeating her win due to such a strong performance as a Columbia linguistics professor diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see her take home another award.
Some other films which could see a lot of action at the Oscars are Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman, starring Michael Keaton. Both films were excellent and unique, and we have to imagine at least one of them will be seeing a few Oscars come February. We’ll know more once the nominees are announced, but expect to see these names crop up in the coming weeks.
While How to Train Your Dragon 2 took home the Globe last night for Best Animated Film, don’t look into its win too much, as we fully expect The Lego Movie to win at the Oscars. Not that HTTYD2 wasn’t worthy of its win, but it’s a sequel and The Lego Movie has truly broken new ground in animated films.
It was wildly successful at the box office and just as popular with critics. This leads us to believe that the Globes was an upset in this category, and we’ll be seeing The Lego Movie cast and crew accepting an Oscar come February.
Amy Adams took home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role in Big Eyes, and we hope she rides this into an Oscar win. Adams is one of, it not the best, actresses currently working in Hollywood.
Many felt Adams was robbed last year when she didn’t win for her role in American Hustle, despite Cate Blanchett’s amazing performance in Blue Jasmine, which won her the Oscar. While Amy Adams has some stiff competition again this year, it’s possible that she could pull an upset and finally get her much deserved Oscar win.
Which Golden Globe winners do you think will make their way to the Oscars?
