Three episodes into Wayward Pines, things only continue to get weirder and more questions are raised.
Let’s look back at the first three episodes and figure out what we know. Hint: It’s not a lot.
Warning: Spoilers for the first three episodes of Wayward Pines follow.
No one is safe
In three episodes, two well-regarded actors have had their characters killed off. Juliette Lewis’ Beverly had her throat cut in the shocking end of episode 2, “Do Not Discuss Your Life Before,” in a reckoning for an attempt to leave Wayward Pines and return to her daughter.
And, at the end of this week’s episode, “Our Town, Our Law,” Terrence Howard’s Sheriff Pope was killed at the hands of the Burke family — Ben hit him with his own truck, and Ethan then shot him. This came on the heels of numerous declarations that Wayward Pines was his town and he was in charge.
Not only does this tell us that no character is safe on this show, it’s also a reminder that both the innocent and the cruel are equally as likely to lose their lives. Moving forward, be worried for your favorite character.
Time doesn’t work in Wayward Pines
Beverly reveals to Ethan that she arrived in Wayward Pines in 1999 and had not been in the town for quite a year despite Ethan knowing it’s 2014. Meanwhile, Kate arrived in the town five weeks earlier but has been in the town for 12 years — and has physically aged accordingly. She told Ethan that after 10 years, fellow Secret Service agent Bill Evans suddenly appeared, and he hadn’t aged at all since she last saw him.
Looking for some more wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey? Ethan saw Theresa and Ben wheeled into the hospital before they made their way to Wayward Pines. He also found Theresa’s car, covered in dust, at about the time the car should have been in an accident. Time doesn’t seem to function normally — or even the same for each person — in Wayward Pines, which creates even more confusion.
Only some people can leave
Sheriff Pope and Dr. Jenkins have been seen outside of Wayward Pines. Pope stopped Theresa and Ben nine miles outside of the town while Dr. Jenkins met with Ethan’s boss, Adam Hassler, in Seattle. Not to mention, supplies have to be coming into the town somehow.
However, when Ethan tried to drive out of the city, he approached the town line only to find himself entering the town once again. More than that reality-warping, though, the town is also surrounded by a giant, electrified fence. It seems like only those in line with The Powers That Be are actually able to leave.
Here there be monsters
After Sheriff Pope was killed, the Burkes jumped into his truck… just as something seemingly inhuman came out of a door in the electrified fence to take his body. The horrific sounds that followed sure made it sound like the body was being eaten.
When taken in context with Sheriff Pope’s dying words — “You think you want to know the truth, but you don’t. It’s worse than anything you could ever imagine.” — things only continue to get weirder. Could the fence be keeping these things out as much as they are keeping people in?
The conspiracy goes pretty high up
When Dr. Jenkins visited Adam Hassler in Seattle, Hassler asked Jenkins to pull the plug; however, Jenkins replied that it was too late. In “Our Town, Our Law,” Hassler also called Wayward Pines to warn them that Theresa and Ben Burke were on their way.
Hassler is in charge of the Secret Service branch in Seattle, which is a pretty high position in itself, but could the conspiracy go even higher up? At this point, nothing should surprise us.
The questions that have been raised after the first three episodes of the series outnumber what we do know to a ridiculous degree. Let the theorizing commence.
