The first full trailer for Lars Van Trier’s (Antichrist) controversial drama Melancholia has been released. The film is Van Trier’s vision on the end of the world, and won star Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man) the Best Actress award at Cannes.
Here’s a rather vague and existential synopsis:
Two sisters find their already strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide into the Earth.
The film has been surrounded in controversy ever since director Lars Van Trier’s comments on his relationship to Nazi’s, which resulted in his permanent ban from the Cannes Film Festival.
Regardless of any behind-the-scenes drama, we think the film looks superb and coupled with a cast that includes the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg (The Science of Sleep), Kiefer Sutherland (24), John Hurt (Harry Potter), Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood), Stellan Skarsgård (Good Will Hunting) and many more, we could be looking at a serious Oscar-contender.
What do you think? Does the film look intriguing enough to see in theaters when it’s released November 11?
