Tomb Raider 2 has officially found its director!
According to Deadline, MGM has tapped director Ben Wheatley to serve as director for the upcoming sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider.
Wheatley takes over directing duties from The Wave helmer Roar Uthaug, who served as director for the first installment of MGM’s action adventure film.
As for Wheatley, the director’s previous credits include 2017’s crime comedy Fire Free and 2011’s crime horror flick Kill List. Most recently, he served as director on the forthcoming big screen adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s novel, Rebecca.
The newly appointed director will be working with Amy Jump, who was tapped to write the screenplay for Tomb Raider 2 back in April.
Jump and Wheatley have a great working relationship having previously worked together on both Fire Free and Kill List.
In front of the camera, Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander will once again return to reprise her role as Lara Croft.
The first installment of the rebooted series found Lara Croft embarking on her toughest journey yet after discovering the island where her missing adventurer father disappeared on.
Unfortunately, fans itching to know what’s next for Lara Croft on the big screen will have to wait. Currently, the studio is keeping plot points with regards to the sequel close to the chest.
Tomb Raider 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on March 19, 2021, and production on the film is set to commence in early 2020.
