The Visual Effects category at this year’s Academy Awards- more frequently called these days “Harry Potter’s only Oscar shot”- has been narrowed down to 10 from the previous 15 nominees. Films omitted include ‘Thor’ ‘Sucker Punch’ ‘Super 8’ ‘Cowboys and Aliens’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’.
Here’s the complete list:
Captain America: The First Avenger
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
Hugo
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Real Steel
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
The Tree of Life
X-Men: First Class
VFX voters will screen 10 minute excerpts of each of the films before chopping the list in half to the final five nominees. Right now, the talk is that Harry Potter, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Hugo are the biggest contenders.
