Author Veronica Roth has announced her first new book since the release of the Divergent finale Allegiant in 2013.
The untitled first novel is described by HarperCollins as being “in the vein of Star Wars” and follows “a boy who forms an unlikely alliance with an enemy.”
“Both desperate to escape their oppressive lives, they help each other attain what they most desire: for one, redemption, and the other, revenge,” HarperCollins says in a press release.
The first book in the two-part series will hit store shelves in 2017. The second novel will arrive in 2018.
Roth told the Associated Press that she’s in the early stages of writing and has been taking her time to develop the book. “I’ve written huge sections a certain way only to cut them and start again,” she said. “I’ve stepped away for a while, to work on other things, and then come back when I have better perspective. I’ve been more patient with myself and with the story. I’ve expanded my collection of comfortable pants and snack foods. It’s all working quite well so far.”
Roth’s upcoming duology will be her first solo work outside of the Divergent world. In addition to the Divergent trilogy she’s also published five short stories about the character Four, and co-wrote Shards & Ashes with Melissa Marr, Kelley Armstrong, Kami Garcia, and Margaret Stohl.
Meanwhile, the Divergent sequel Insurgent arrives later this month.
