Uncut Gems features Adam Sandler playing against type, in a dramatic role that earned raves from critics during the film festival circuit.
Adam Sandler may be best known for his comedic chops, but the actor has proven he’s no slouch when it comes to taking on more dramatic roles, as well.
In 2002, the actor received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his role in Punch-Drunk Love, a film that was likewise chosen to show at the Cannes Film Festival.
His newest film, Uncut Gems, has him flexing those dramatic skills once more, in a performance that had many critics at both the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival buzzing about an Oscar nomination.

In Uncut Gems, Adam Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a New York City jeweler who manages to acquire a rare Ethiopian opal which former Celtics player Kevin Garnett — who plays himself in the film — shows an interest in. Believing the stone to be a good-luck charm, Ratner begins taking bets that put his career and safety in danger. They also cause him to violently clash with gangsters and those around him — including The Weeknd, who also plays himself in the film.
Joining Adam Sandler in his foray into the dramatic is Idina Menzel, who plays Howard’s wife, Dinah. Lakeith Stanfield and Julia Fox also star in the film.
Uncut Gems was written and directed by Benny and Josh Safdie — better known as the Safdie brothers — who are best known for their fantastic work on the Robert Pattinson headlined Good Time.
Uncut Gems had its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, then followed up with a showing at the Toronto Film Festival. It will be released for general audiences on December 13.
