Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, will be playing Jean Grey, who was originally played by Famke Janssen. We think she’s an excellent choice, and definitely has the look for one of the most powerful mutants in the X-Men.
Update: (January 26) Sophie has revealed that she was on her way to an audition, saying, “I was getting out of the car to walk in to the audition. And then my agent started ringing and she was like ‘Have you heard the news?’ ‘No, what news?’ Then she was like ‘Check your Twitter’. So then I checked it and… I was just getting like, ‘Congratulations Jean Grey.'”
The actress said she broke down in tears after hearing the news that she’d been cast as a young Jean Grey, and we continue to be excited about her involvement in X-Men: Apocalypse.
Tye Sheridan has been cast as young Cyclops, with his most recent role playing a young boy alongside Matthew Mcconaughey in Mud. He proved to be a very solid actor in the highly praised film, and we look forward to seeing him in the role which was made famous by James Marsden.
Marsden chimed in on the casting of his character’s younger self, saying, “I think he’s a wonderfully talented actor who blew me away in Mud. I’ve never seen a kid that young be that present and that powerful. So, I think he’s a perfect fit and I congratulate him.”
Young Storm will be played by actress Alexandra Shipp, who has mostly been seen in television roles including Your Family and Mine. Halle Berry had a massive fanbase as the original Storm, so we look forward to seeing how Shipp performs in the beloved role.
It was always going to be a momentous task replacing actors who have played these characters for nearly 20 years now, but we have some faith as the studio did a great job casting Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult in their respective roles.
X-Men: Apocalypse is set to be directed by Bryan Singer, with Simon Kinberg penning the script, and will be released in theaters May 27, 2016.
