Tris will have a pixie hair cut for ‘Insurgent,’ Shailene Woodley reveals

Divergent series star Shailene Woodley has revealed that Tris will have a dramatically different haircut for the upcoming sequel Insurgent.

The haircut you see in the photo above – taken this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con – will be the one Tris sports in Insurgent this March. Woodley dropped the surprise tidbit while speaking to BuzzFeed.

“I talked to the director [Robert Schwentke] because I didn’t want to wear a wig,” she said. “I think wigs always look wiggy, especially in an action movie. We’re running so much and doing so much, I think, technically, a wig would have looked quite shitty.”*

“I think it’s cool to have a young heroine with short hair,” she added.

Theo James, who plays Four, was also at Comic-Con this weekend and spoke highly of the new hairstyle. “When I’m looking at Shai on screen, now you get a character progression in a visual way. There’s a maturity and a difference between the character here and in the first movie.”

The actress had cut her long locks last summer to prepare for her role as Hazel Lancaster in the book to film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars, which was filmed after Divergent.

Our first official look at Woodley in Insurgent should be very interesting since it’ll be a dramatically different look from how Tris looked in Divergent:

It’s worth noting that in the book by Veronica Roth, Tris cuts her hair so that it goes down to her jawline. Obviously, Woodley’s cut is even shorter than that.

Woodley and James were at Comic-Con to sign posters promoting the home entertainment release of Divergent. The film is currently available on Digital HD and will hit DVD/Blu-ray on August 5.

*(We wonder if Woodley knows that fellow YA action star Jennifer Lawrence is wearing a wig for her role as Katniss in Mockingjay. We saw Katniss’ appearance in the film for the first time yesterday, and the wig didn’t look “wiggy.” Then again, Katniss has a braid which is probably more manageable than free-flowing hair.)
