Update 9/20/19: Erica Durance will join her Smallville costar Tom Welling in the upcoming Arrow-verse crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths
Hot off the heels of the news that Smallville star Tom Welling will be joining the massive Arrow-verse crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths, TVLine announced that fellow costar Erica Durance will be joining him as well!
Durance played Lois Lane opposite Tom Welling’s Clark Kent for six seasons. Her appearance as Lois will be the first on-screen reunion between the two since the Smallville series finale in 2011. It won’t, however, mark the first appearance that Erica Durance has had in the Arrow-verse, as the actress had previously made an appearance with a run as Supergirl’s mother, Alura Zor-El.
That one might take a bit of explaining — or not, as this is all about the multiversity anyway, so the crossover might just hand wave it all away.
While the Crisis on Infinite Earths will feature a veritable buffet of Superman, Deadline reports that that won’t be the case for Lois Lane, as no reports have surfaced of other versions of Lois Lane making an appearance.
Still, we’re glad that the two Smallville actors will have a role to play in the upcoming crossover, as the Arrow-verse shows owe quite a bit to the superhero predecessor.
As Arrow co-creator/executive producer Marc Guggenheim himself said, “For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it.”
Original Story 9/19/19: Tom Welling will be reprising his Smallville role in the upcoming Arrow-verse crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths.
The DCCW shows are no stranger to big crossover events. While Arrow kicked off the DCCW universe, it was soon joined by The Flash, and the producers of both wasted no time in letting us know that the two existed in the same space. Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl followed soon after, and the crossover events between all four shows have become somewhat of a staple in the Arrow-verse.
Still, even by DCCW standards, the upcoming crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths is set to be the biggest one yet. Not only will it include all the Arrow-verse shows, including the yet-to-debut Batwoman, but this time will also loop in to include Black Lightning — a show that has previously maintained its own continuity completely separate from any of the other DCCW shows.
And it turns out that’s not the only big news to get excited about.
EW broke the news this morning that Tom Welling — who played Clark Kent in the CW DC show that started it all, Smallville — will be reprising his role in the upcoming DCCW crossover event.
While we don’t currently know any specifics, we will find out what Tom Welling’s Clark Kent has been up to in the last 8 years since Smallville ended.
Tom Welling won’t be the only alternate universe Superman to grace the crossover. Tyler Hoechlin will return as the Arrow-verse’s Superman, while Legends of Tomorrow’s Brandon Routh — who played the Big Blue Boyscout in Superman Returns — will appear as Superman in a costume inspired by Alex Ross’ Kingdom Come design.
“Crisis on Infinite Earths” begins with Supergirl on Sunday, Dec. 8, followed by Batwoman on Monday, Dec. 9 and The Flash on Tuesday, Dec. 10. After the winter hiatus, the crossover begins once more on Tuesday, Jan. 14 with Arrow at 8 p.m. and ends with Legends of Tomorrow at 9 p.m.
