Peter Jackson, best known for his work on the Lord of the Rings franchise, has stated his price for directing an episode of Doctor Who, and that price is one golden dalek.
Peter Jackson’s name popped up in relationship to the Doctor Who franchise last fall when Matt Smith was speaking with a New Zealand newspaper. During the course of the interview, Smith was asked if Doctor Who would ever film in New Zealand. Smith stated that he’d be keen on the idea, but such things were not up to him. New Zealand’s best known director and huge Doctor Who fan, Peter Jackson, heard about the interview and responded, “I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, and I think Matt’s fantastic. Just name a time and place, and I’ll be there!”
Flash-forward to Christmas 2012, and Peter Jackson and Steven Moffat meet at The Hobbit premiere in London. Again, speculation starts up, however, given that much of the current series was already filmed, the earliest Jackson could participate would be the Christmas 2013 episode.
According to the latest issue of EW, Peter Jackson has named his price for directing an episode of Doctor Who, “They don’t even have to pay me. But I have got my eye on one of those nice new gold-colored Daleks. They must have a spare one (hint, hint).”
EW then followed up with Steven Moffat, and asked if the BBC could afford Jackson’s name price.
“You’d never get any information like that out of me!” Moffat said, tongue planted in cheek. Speaking more seriously, the exec producer claimed he was open to the idea of Jackson directing an episode of the show. “We’re theoretically on board for anything” he said “provided we’ve got a great story.”
At this stage of the game, it’s likely that the earliest that Jackson might be called into action is the 8th series, which would presumably begin to air in late 2014. The most obvious impediment to all of this is his ongoing work as the director of The Hobbit trilogy.
Would you like to see Jackson get his hands on the Doctor Who franchise? Do you think the Doctor should visit New Zealand?
