Sigourney Weaver claims that James Cameron’s fabled Avatar sequels are going to be amazing.
Avatar changed the face of cinema when it came out in 2009. Mostly because literally every action blockbuster now has to be in 3D for some reason.
But, despite its Pocahontas-ripoff story premise, it was genuinely a fine movie. Right?
At least it was fine enough for James Cameron to delve into making not one, not two, but three Avatar sequels, all filmed simultaneously with top-secret scripts (hence why no one’s heard anything about them for the better part of a decade).
One of the series’ original stars — whose character was killed off in the first one, by the way — Sigourney Weaver, has now finally begun finally defrosting this iceberg, speaking about the sequels in an interview with Variety:
“In my opinion, the three scripts I’ve read so far are many times more amazing than the first one in terms of their scope. [James Cameron] did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first movie, establishing the family and the relationships and the world, and now he really gets to play.”
So when can we expect to finally see the fruit of their labors? Well, the second Avatar movie possibly comes out on December 21, 2018, according to this report about upcoming 20th Century Fox release dates.
That means almost 10 years will have passed between the release of the first and second one. We really hope Weaver is right in her estimation, because James Cameron is putting a lot of stock and time into the development of this universe!
