NBC has renewed This Is Us for three more seasons at the network, taking it through 2022 and up to season 6.
The news came Sunday morning, as part of the NBC announcement of its fall 2019-20 schedule. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources have said that creator Dan Fogelman envisages season 6 as the last for This Is Us. However, NBC are hopeful that the series could move beyond that point.
“In a television landscape with nearly 500 original scripted series, there are very few, if any, that have the critical and cultural impact of This Is Us and we couldn’t be more proud to bring fans three more seasons of a show that so well represents the NBC brand,” NBC Entertainment Scripted Presidents Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta said of the multi-season renewal. “A huge thank you and congratulations to our executive producers, cast and crew who reach new heights every week with the show’s inventive and compelling storytelling.”
Fogelman, who recently signed a five-year, nine-figure overall deal with 20th TV, also spoke about his vision for This Is Us, and how the three-season renewal fits into that.
“We’re roughly in the middle of where the television series is going to go,” Fogelman said. “We never set out to make a television series that was going to last 18 seasons, and so we have a very direct plan. I have script pages I have written and I’m writing that really are deep, deep, deep into the future. We have a plan for what we’re going to do and I know what the plan is.”
The renewal is the second multi-season pickup the show has received. During its freshman season, Fox — who still owned This Is Us at the time — renewed the show for its second and third seasons. Now, in the midst of its third season, it has been picked up for three more, likely aiding This Is Us on its way to syndication — for which it’ll need 100 episodes.
