The Walking Dead season 6, episode 11 offered an eventful hour of television as the characters penetrated a couple of satellite buildings holding the Saviors.
Anyone who was hoping to see Negan this episode was left hanging, unless he was killed in the impressive amount of gunfire during TWD 6×11. But let’s be real: Negan is not dead, and the worst is yet to come.
Cookie Cutter Carol
The episode kicks off with Carol spreading some cookie-licious cheer around Alexandria thanks to some freshly made beet and acorn cookies — mmm! But what’s behind these random acts of kindness? At the end of her delivery route she stops to leave a cookie at Sam’s grave, where she encounters Morgan. Things are still not good between these two.
Carol has quite the interesting episode. She’s starting to feel bad about the people she’s killed, as evidenced by her notebook in which she’s keeping track of those she’s eliminated. She appears to have killed 18 people so far, and it also appears to be bothering her. Uh oh, is Morgan’s “all life is precious” mantra finally getting to her?
Maybe a little romance will cure her woes! That night she decides to take a stroll with a cigarette and bumps into Tobin out on his stoop. He’s impressed by her skills, and she likes that! She gives him a kiss. Step aside, Richonne! There are a couple new lovebirds in town.
The Saviors
At the top of the episode Rick holds a meeting at Alexandria to lay out the plan they made with Hilltop to take out the Saviors. Morgan doesn’t like this idea (Surprise!), so he objects to the plan to surprise attack Negan’s group. Aaron reminds us that Alexandria was attacked viciously once, and they can’t let that crap happen again. Really, how can you argue with that point, Morgan?
In fact, I’ve officially lost my patience for Morgan after tonight. We’ve seen him present this song and dance before, and it’s getting us nowhere. All it’s doing is making us regret ever being excited about when he rejoined Rick. Yes, this is an issue that he grapples with deeply (as we see when he breaks down and cries at the end of the episode), but not killing people is clearly not an option in this world.
The plan to penetrate the Saviors moves forward without Morgan. The Saviors accept the fake head that is presented to them by Andy, and in a series of quick attacks, Team Rick takes out the two guards and many people inside. Intense scenes depict our heroes entering the satellite building and killing anyone they find. The scenes are quite hard to watch, in part because Team Rick is killing a lot of these people by putting knives through their skulls as they sleep. It’s tough to watch people be killed without a chance to defend themselves. Then again, this is exactly the type of crap Negan would be pulling. Maybe scenes like this are happening as a way of gearing Negan up to commit total annihilation.
On the wall next to a guy Glenn kills, an eerie sign of Negan’s wrath appears: Polaroids depict no less than 20 people whose heads have been bashed in. Is the fact that Glenn is looking at these proof that it’s he who will meet Negan’s bat? Or are showrunners setting us up for one big fake out? Remember, there were signs of Glenn’s impending doom last week too.
Unfortunately Team Rick’s plan starts to fall apart when one of the Saviors comes out of nowhere and tries to attack Abraham and Sasha. He manages to pull an alarm before he’s killed by the two lovebirds.
Outside, Carol hears the alarm and decides to run in to assist. Maggie tries to go in too, but Carol tells her she shouldn’t. Based on what we’ve seen this episode, we can assume that Carol wants Maggie to have a better life than she does. A life with less demons haunting her.
Back inside the Saviors’ compound, viewers continue to witness one of the most intense fight sequences the show’s pulled off. In what can be considered a perfect execution, Team Rick takes out all of the Saviors (that they encounter, at least) without losing one of their own. It’s a success, but seeing all these lives lost is tough to look at for the characters (and probably viewers). Hell, even Father Gabriel got in a kill. “AMEN” to that!
At this point we reach the end of the episode, and things are looking up! Our clocks indicate that the episode has run out of time. Things are good! It’s time get ready for Talking Dead! See you next week, Walking Dead! The only issue is that Team Rick didn’t figure out which one Negan was (lol).
…
…
But wait. Things aren’t okay. A small group of women have captured Carol and Maggie, and they’re holding them hostage.
In a preview for next week it looks like we’ll jump back in time slightly to rejoin Carol and Maggie when we last saw them. At this point it’s not clear if these women who captured Carol and Maggie are directly associated with Negan, but it’s certainly a good possibility.
“The Saviors, they’re scary, but those pricks got nothin’ on you,” Andy says to Rick after the latter innocently bashes a fake, dead head. Well, it’s true in that Rick is one surprising man, but we have a feeling Negan will be a lot, lot worse.
