“Next stop, the Twilight Zone!” X-Men director Bryan Singer is setting up a reboot of the classic The Twilight Zone for CBS.
While the project is still in the early stages of development, Deadline reports that Singer “has closed a deal to develop, executive produce and possibly direct a reboot of Rod Serling’s classic.” CBS owns the rights to the original series and the deal is finalized, pending approval from Rod Sterling’s estate.
Apart from Singer’s involvement, the project is still in infancy stages, as a writer is currently being sought to pen the script of The Twilight Zone. Singer previously served as executive producer on House, as well as directing the pilot episodes.
Set to return to the X-Men franchise with X-Men: Days of Future Past, Singer’s plate is quite full at the moment, although he seems keen to bring the series back to life with CBS.
For even the most casual fans of the original series, it’s a little worrisome to hear about such an influential and important series getting a modern reboot. There’s clearly all kinds of potential with The Twilight Zone, but there was some special factor about it that won’t be easy to recreate, particularly considering it’s fifty years since the series aired. Nothing is set in stone, and Singer’s involvement doesn’t even mean the show will ever make it to air, but one has to wonder whether The Twilight Zone belongs as a modern-day production.
Originally airing from 1959-1964 on CBS, The Twilight Zone has become one of the all-time classics for the network, and even had a reboot during the 1980s before eventually coming off the air. The show has become quite sacred for many fans of the show, so it will be interesting to see whether the idea of a reboot will go over well with fans of the show.
