The note from Plec reveals that on Monday The Originals will begin filming season 5, which will also serve as its final one.
It seems as though the decision comes from Plec who notes that, “It’s both a gift and a burden to be able to control the ending of a series.”
She also adds that, “Ending a show is always bittersweet, but for me, it’s a true blessing to be part of making that choice. I want each actor to play their last scene as their character, and to put their character to bed with grace and care. For each craftman to take a final walk on the sets they built, the lights they’ve hung. To chose the final song or score for the final scene. To turn out the lights at the end of the last day, knowing that they can take a moment to be proud of all that they’ve created, and to say goodbye before they walk out the door for the last time. And I want the fans to be able to go along on that ride with us.”
Joseph Morgan also tweeted about the final season:
#TheOriginalsS5 will be our last. Thanks for your undying support & I hope you'll keep the darkest corner of your heart reserved for us ;)

The Originals season 5 is set to return to the CW sometime in 2018.
