The Mikaelsons continue to surprise us season after season with their secrets, and the one revealed in tonight’s episode of The Originals season 3 is a new low, even for them.
Everything we knew to expect in this episode talked up Klaus and Aurora’s reunion. We were all waiting to see how the Original hybrid would react to seeing his first post-vampire change love again, and it didn’t disappoint. However, as all great shows do, they buried the lead. Klaus and Aurora’s reunion was definitely important, but mostly because it revealed what could very well be the greatest betrayal the Mikaelsons have revealed yet.
We learned all about Klaus and Aurora’s romantic history in tonight’s episode. We saw their first kiss, their first fight, her first (and second) death, their first post-vampire hookup, and ultimately, their end. We saw all the highlights of their epic romance, but it wasn’t until we found out the crucial missing detail that we truly understood why their story is so tragic.
Klaus believed Aurora to have committed the most heinous act of his lifetime. He and his siblings were forced to flee her family’s estate to save themselves from Mikael. Rather than join him on the run, Aurora looked him in the eye and delivered a fatal blow to Klaus’ ego with her parting speech. She claimed she didn’t love him, had never loved him, and could never love him. Talk about painful.
The only thing more painful than having to witness Klaus having his heart ripped out by his first immortal love was learning that she didn’t ever actually feel that way. Moments after seeing their parting in flashback, we learned that she didn’t do it of her own free will. Elijah discovered compulsion that night when he ordered Aurora to tell him Klaus’ secret, and she literally could not stop herself from speaking words she promised to take with her to her grave. Elijah must have sensed her unwillingness and after realizing that she didn’t freely give him those secrets, he ordered her to “see the monster he really is.”
Elijah, the most honorable and moral of the Mikaelson siblings, willingly forced Klaus’ first real love out of his life. Despite everything they’ve been through, it seems this could be the thing that tips the scale. Klaus and Elijah may not be able to put this sin behind them. Elijah had reasons for wanting to keep them apart, but ultimately, Klaus blames Elijah for the life he has led. He cites Aurora’s heartless speech as the moment that put him on his destructive path. Elijah screams at Klaus to take responsibility for his own actions, but it’s clear that a line has been drawn. The brothers are at war.
The rest of the story
1. Cami was arrested by Detective Will Kinney for the smiley murders.
2. Davina freed Hayley and Jackson from the curse for good.
3. Aurora’s sire was Rebekah (in case you hadn’t figured that out).
4. Marcel’s minions trailed Tristan to a club with secret exits that lead to a recently acquired Kingmaker property (AKA Lucien and Tristan are working together).
