Stephen Colbert guest stars as the reformed priest tonight on The Mindy Project season 3, episode 20, “Confessions of a Catho-holic.”
What happens when Danny confesses only half of his sins before the priest dies? He has to confess the other half to an old neighbor. The only problem is, this neighbor used to be the ‘cool kid’ on the block — drugs, tattoos, so many women even Barney Stinson would be jealous — and is now a strict, devout Catholic.
Of course, Danny panics a little and says Mindy is a Catholic, and that they’re just living together. No unlawful sex happening here! Mindy, determined to get Father Michael to like her, invites him to dinner.
Father Michael shows up wearing his dress robes and a leather motorcycle jacket because habits die hard. Mindy spends most of the dinner texting Morgan asking for talking points. The Old Testament verses, the fact that there is a New Testament, that kind of stuff. She manages to makes it to the bathroom break between dinner and board games when she realizes there are condoms in the medicine cabinets . It doesn’t matter if you’re a priest or a guest in Lady Gaga’s house — you’re gonna snoop through the medicine cabinet (pro tip: don’t do this — unless you are at Gaga’s, because you know there’s interesting stuff in there.)
They start talking about Danny’s “old” girlfriend, the one who was sex-maniac and not religious. But Mindy — Catholic Mindy who can discuss the bible — is an amazing match for him. While playing into the facade, Mindy becomes visibly distraught — does Danny really think this fake version of her is better than the real her? She leaves for bed and the evening almost goes off without a hitch.
Danny’s screensaver is playing on his computer. It’s already established he made Mindy’s sonogram of their son the screensaver for … everything. Instead of hiding yet another aspect of his life from his priest, he can’t lie about this. He’s having a baby with a woman he’s not married to. And he doesn’t feel guilty about it. This is the happiest he’s ever been!
Mindy saves the evening — and Danny from being ex-communicated — by saying she wants her baby to be like Danny. She wants him to be raised Catholic. It’s a sweet moment for the two, overseen by Father Michael.
We loved seeing Colbert back on our televisions tonight. The man hasn’t done much acting (well, in roles that don’t resemble Hobbits) and since his show ended nearly half a year ago, we haven’t seen much of him. Suddenly though, he’s doing red carpets and interviews and guest roles with his crazy beard, making us thrilled when it was announced he’d be on The Mindy Project. Was it a random guest role? Yes. But did he fit in perfectly? Yes.
In other random B-plots to add to the list this season: Jeremy, trying to preform a one-man show about his life but he can’t remember his lines. During his performance in a black-box theater and barely passable props, he forgets his lines, Beverley drops the cigarette that was dangling from her sleepy hand, and she ends up setting the guy next to her on fire. The sprinklers go off and the show is ruined. What a shame. He ends up performing the show again in the office for the Schulman & Associates employees.
