The Magicians 3×05 found Penny busy learning how to exist, and we spent our time wondering just what the heck is going on.
The driving question behind episode 3×05 was focused on consent and final wishes. But for the audience our questions were a little different. We have the luxury of knowing that Penny exists outside his body and knew exactly what he wanted in his ‘final moments.’
However, we were still left with plenty of unresolved questions to think over while we wait for the next episode. Read along to help us unpack.
Is there a way to bring Penny back?
First and foremost, we gotta know if there’s a way to bring Penny back. We know that his soul (or shade?) isn’t exactly gone, so it’s completely possible that he can return to his friends in some fashion. But now that his body has not only died but been destroyed, it’s hard to imagine where he can return to. Especially considering that the reserves on magic are a little low right now…
The good news however, is that it only took Penny seven days to learn how to inhabit a penny, gollum, and a candle with varying levels of success. So assuming he makes contact, and assuming that magic does return, who’s to say that he and his friends can’t jerry-rigged some sort of possible solution. It’s kind of The Magicians M.O.
Who or what is contacting Julia?
There are some questions we can roll with but this probably shouldn’t be one of them. For the last couple of episodes, Julia has been contacted by some unknown — force — and she’s just kind of going with it?
Granted, she’s seen some weird shit in her day. So her barometer for ‘this is unsettling’ is a little out of whack. And to be fair, it doesn’t seem like the being is too malicious or anything. Yet. The being, whatever it was, warned Julia of Kady’s overdose and that’s what allowed her to save her friend.
But the most curious thing we learned in this episode was that fairies seem to be following her around. At least that what the truth revealing key seemed to suggest. Are they somehow related to Julia’s spark of magic? Is she being contacted by the fairy queen herself? No offense Julia, but what would she be interested in you for? Questions within questions for this one.
Is Margo’s plan to usurp the fairy queen going to work?
Or is she, you know… Going to get everyone in Fillory killed? That’s a legitimate question. Because listen. If you’re going to come for that fairy bitch, a half ass plan of subterfuge isn’t going to cut it. And by now, Margo should know that.
In fact. Maybe that’s the lesson that Fairy Queen is trying to teach you. Last episode she seemed very invested in Margo’s ability to lead. It’s hard to know what Fairy Queen’s long term plan here is, but I am starting to wonder if these are misguided attempts to shape Margo into the type of ruler she knows she can be.
Who owns the Brakebills building?
At first glance this may seem like one of the sillier questions to come out of this episode. Does anyone really care about who owns the Physical Kids Cottage? Probably not.
But let’s be real. With this show, sometimes the most insignificant details birth a whole range of crazy antics. And no one really escapes the past. In this episode alone we learned more about Rupert Chatwin.
Martin and Jane Chatwin have already proved to be incredibly relevant to our story and world. So there’s no telling what this little one off comment about being evicted from the house could reveal. I’m keeping my eye on this one.
Can Penny and Kady make it work?
I might be jumping the gun here a bit seeing as Penny is basically dead. But this is The Magicians and weirder relationships have existed.
If you ask me, Penny and Kady’s relationship has been on shaky ground for a while now. During some terrible moments in their lives, the two cling to each other for respite. But now that Penny is existing on another plane… ‘Clinging’ in the traditional sense is essentially out of the question.
That doesn’t mean they’re instantly doomed however. There’s still a lot up in the air for these two. Penny is about to make contact and maybe they can work something out. Either way, they both have some serious work to do on themselves before a solid relationship can be built.
Yeah I said solid. Pun INTENDED.
