If you are looking for what lurks beneath the hatch, you are not going to find that here. Damon Lindelof’s return to television is not going to answer that question. (Which may be welcoming news for fans of Lost still recovering.) HBO’s The Leftovers, based on the best-selling novel by Tom Perrotta, is set to begin a ten episode run tonight.
What to expect:
The Leftovers uses the supernatural event as a catalyst, nothing more. Creatures are not coming back to claim the remainder, there is no superior being looking for more victims. Instead, you may see all of those elements arise from the humans left on earth as they adjust to the world following the event.
The overarching question of the series explores one that other sci-fi thrillers tend to ignore, how do you go about your normal life after giant transformers battle on the freeway? Do you continue to commute to work on the 405 or do you simply take the backroads to your desk job? Do you even go back to work? Life doesn’t stop in the face of cataclysmic events, instead people adapt and move forward. That is what The Leftovers is attempting to show viewers.
The paths that the characters take will guide them through this post rapture world. Whether it is white clothing, the chain smoking, the vow of silence, the self-identified Guilty Remanant creates symbolism in a world where they otherwise may not have had it. Another route, a cult leader believes he can hug people’s pain away.
The Leftovers is not about rewarding the audience for finding meaning in hidden easter eggs, that will eventually explain the disappearance. Instead it is about watching a group of people struggle with reality and that is the most haunting part of the series.
Instead the show grapples with larger metaphysical questions. Why did Shaq get taken and Lebron left here? What makes a murderer remain and a newborn depart? Granted those are merely a few questions on a broad spectrum, but the show does little to offer up any strain of levity for the viewer to catch their breath.
Our recommendation: Enter with an open mind and let the show challenge you.
