The Leftovers‘ second season will experience a slight shake up in location and casting.
Earlier this fall, Damon Lindelof offered some hints for the direction of The Leftovers‘ second season. According to Deadline, some of those hints for season 2 are closer to being confirmed this weekend.
The show will remain focused on the Garvey family, Nora Durst included, as Deadline confirms, “locked in to come back are most of the leads — star Justin Theroux, his onscreen family, estranged wife, played by Amy Brenneman, and children Margaret Qualley and Chris Zylka, as well as Carrie Coon, who plays Theroux’s love interest, and Christopher Eccleston, who portrays former reverend Matt Jamison.” But the rest of the cast remains in flux. Who does that include exactly?
Well, Emily Meade as Aimee, Jill’s best friend, and their cronies the Frost twins played by Max and Charlie Carver may not make an appearance if the show does leave Mapleton, NY. That may also mean that Lucy Warburton, Mapleton’s mayor played by Amanada Warren will experience limited involvement.

As for the members of the Guilty Remnant, there is no word on whether Meg, played by Liv Tyler, will appear following the meltdown in the season 1 finale. Although Deadline’s report does lean towards suggesting Liv will return in some capacity along with another member of the GR.
Earlier this fall, Lindelof was asked whether Ann Dowd, who played arguably the best character in season 1, Patti, will return for season 2. Although the character died in the episode, “Cairo,” Lindelof commented, “We try to approach these shows as writers, with our fan hats on. I would want to see more of Ann Dowd, and that character had such an immense impact and power over the first season. I think she’s got more to say. So I’ll just leave it at that.”
The first season of the show exhausted the material from the novel by Tom Perrotta. Perrotta remains on the creative team for the show’s second season and will assist in expanding the post-departure world he created in Mapleton.
The Leftovers will return to HBO Summer 2015.
