Many questions have been raised on whether or not The Giver movie will handle the book’s color situation correctly, and these newly released character posters may put fans at ease.
When the first images and trailer were released, fans were in an uproar because presenting The Giver in color would go against the content in the book. Even stills released last week were in color.
For fans of the book, this kind of promotion simply does not make sense given the content of the book. In the novel, people in the future cannot see color along with feeling almost any kind of emotion. Instead of selling this point to those who haven’t read the novel, much of the promotion thus far has sold The Giver as similar to many other dystopian adaptations, clearly hoping to tie into that audience.
Apart from a featurette released in April that was clearly released to appease worried fans, there has been no indication in marketing that the black and white content of the film would even exist. Until now.
Several character posters have just been released. These posters are largely black and white apart from a strip of color in each of them. The way these posters are showing the addition of color doesn’t exactly align with the book’s content, but this stylization that’s likely just for these posters should show fans that they need not worry about the color scheme of the film.
The newly released character posters feature Brenton Thwaites as Jonas, Jeff Bridges as The Giver, Meryl Streep as Chief Elder, Taylor Swift as Rosemary, Katie Holmes as Jonas’ mother, Alexander Skarsgård as Jonas’ father, Cameron Monaghan as Asher, and Odeya Rush as Fiona.
