Casting continues for the sophomore season of The Flash, with the show looking for another hero.
On the heels of the news that The Flash would be casting a new love interest for Barry in its second season, we’re now learning that Barry won’t be the only hero on the show.
A casting call has been released for a “classically handsome” and “square-jawed hero” who is in his 30s to early 40s, reports TVLine. The character, currently being referred to as “John Clark,” is also described as “slightly cynical” and as having an “edge.”
He is expected to be a season-long character.

John Clark is the name of a DC Comics letter, so clearly this is a pseudonym to disguise the true character being cast. Clark worked on issues involving The Shadow and characters from the All-Star Squadron and Infinity, Inc.
One popular theory floating around is that this will be Jay Garrick, the original Flash from the comics. His iconic helmet flew through the wormhole in the season 1 finale, prompting Wells/Thawne to enter his time machine, so there has been some set up for his potential appearance.
Perhaps notably, Jay Garrick is a number of the All-Star Squadron.

Furthermore, after the season 1 finale, The Flash executive producer Andrew Kreisberg teased, “We are going to introduce a few more speedsters next year and a bunch more villains.”
Either way, it’s interesting that The Flash seems to be bringing in more heroes; this is a trend Arrow began with Barry’s introduction in season 2 and eventual incorporation of Ray Palmer/The Atom into the regular cast in season 3.
The Flash returns with new episodes this fall on Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
