The Flash season 2, episode 3, “Family of Rogues,” aired tonight. Read our recap and discuss the episode with fellow fans.
This week’s episode looked at family drama on both sides of the law.
Snart family drama
Lisa Snart returns to ask the S.T.A.R. Labs team to help find her brother, Captain Cold, who she believed to be kidnapped. Barry owed Snart a favor, so the team tracks him down. However, Barry finds his arch nemesis working with his father, Lewis. Snart blasts Barry with his cold gun, but luckily Cisco had outfitted the suit with heat for just that sort of occasion.
When Barry brings the news back to Lisa, though, she is terrified. In a surprisingly genuine heart-to-heart with Cisco, Lisa reveals that her father was an abusive career criminal, and Leonard practically raised her. If Leonard is working with Lewis, there is something seriously wrong.
Barry finds Leonard at a diner and tells him he won’t stop looking into whatever job the Snarts were working because while Snart has a code, Lewis doesn’t. Lewis proves Barry right when he blows the head off of his tech guy. Gross. Barry realizes that Lewis is holding Lisa over Leonard’s head; Lewis injected her with a bomb.
To keep track of Lewis, Barry infiltrates the Snart team as a tech guy. He initially keeps Lewis from killing innocents and uses his speed to break into a high security location, but after Barry served his purpose, Lewis shoots him — to Leonard’s discomfort. Well, tries to shoot him; Barry catches the bullet and fakes going down.
Meanwhile, Cisco comes up with a tool to remove the bomb, but doing so would be risky. Lisa, though, trusts him enough to let him try.
Once Leonard and Lewis have broken into a vault and stolen jewels, The Flash appears. Lewis tries to force Leonard to shoot The Flash, but Cisco removes the bomb from Lisa. With Lisa safe, Leonard shoots his father with the cold gun, killing him. When Barry asks why he did it, Leonard replies, “He broke my sister’s heart. Only fair I break his.”
Barry visits Leonard at Iron Heights and tells him he knows Leonard would do anything for his sister and that there is good in him. This is clearly setting up his involvement in Legends of Tomorrow.
Mama West returns
Meanwhile, Joe struggles with telling Iris about the return of her mother, Francine. Francine was a drug addict, and when Joe got her into rehab, she disappeared. Joe reveals that he lied all these years because of the burden it would put on Iris. However, Francine wants to see Iris. Iris forgives Joe and agrees to see her mother.
Also worth noting…
- After collapsing at the end of the last episode, Dr. Stein appears to recover quickly. However, at the end of this episode, Stein lights up like Firestorm, only with a blue flame, before collapsing. Losing Ronnie has clearly affected his health.
- Jay has a nice heart-to-heart with Caitlin, talking about missing his speed. Caitlin believes he can be as much of a hero as a physicist as a superhero. These two have ridiculously good chemistry, and it’s fun seeing their relationship develop.
- Speaking of chemistry: Lisa and Cisco. “I like to see you smile,” she tells Cisco before he could potentially kill her by removing the bomb. Before leaving, she bids Cisco farewell — with a kiss.
- Oh, and then there is Barry and Patty. They keep running into each other at Jitters, and Patty gives Barry her number in an awkwardly adorable scene.
- Iris forgiving Joe for his two-decade lie is a refreshing change of pace, since a season-long estrangement between father and daughter would not have gone over well.
- Jay manages to stabilize the breach in S.T.A.R. Labs, and Caitlin is particularly bothered by the possibility of him leaving so soon. When Barry concurs, Jay agrees to say until they take care of Zoom.
- In the final moments of the episode, Harrison Wells from Earth-2 steps through the disturbance.
