Meryl Streep has now won the Golden Globe for Best Actress-Drama and it seems that some people are upset it didn’t go to Viola Davis. I’m quite upset that people think this way. If we are truly looking at who performed better in their films alone, clearly the winner is Meryl Streep. Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Margret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” is remarkable and astonishing. Very few could do what Meryl Streep does. The way she speaks and moves like Thatcher is perfect.
When we look at Viola Davis’s role in “The Help”, which was also very good and she deserves every nomination, it can be looked at as a role that many could have taken though. Like I said before, don’t get me wrong, her acting was very good. Like Meryl Streep said, this woman needs more movies. But I believe that Viola Davis is getting all this award season momentum by more the film itself than her acting alone. “The Help” was very successful and will most likely be nominated for Best Picture. With that, the cast as an ensemble did very well and Viola is benefiting from that.
People should not have the mentality that since Meryl Streep has won almost every award in the past, she should not win, and others like Viola Davis should win. This is the kind of mentality that kept Streep from winning for her role in “Julie & Julia”. Streep was up against Bullock who was a first time nominee and was looked at like Americas Favorite. It just seems pointless to nominate Meryl Streep almost every other year for an Oscar and have her lose. The award for Best Actress should go to the actress who was the BEST that year, and Meryl Streep was the BEST in 2011. Even Time magazine named her performance the Best of 2011. For the people who think Meryl has won enough, Meryl Streep only has one Oscar for Best Actress, the other one was for Supporting-Actress. Meryl should not lose due to the fact that “The Iron Lady” has done poorly with critics. It is her performance that matters. Almost every review of “The Iron Lady” reads that Meryl Streep overshadows the film itself and that Meryl Streep is at her best. Meryl Streep should win this year because her acting was the BEST and it needs recognition. So TEAM MERYL STREEP ALL THE WAY!!! P.S. Meryl’s acceptance speech was the most humble speech of the night. She praised Viola so many time. Yes, Meryl Streep is not a sore loser at all, but she still describes the Oscar as still “the one” to win.
