As expected, Supergirl will get a second season. The surprising part? It will air on The CW.
Not only will the series move to The CW, which is co-owned by CBS and Warner Bros., for its second season (per THR) production will move to Vancouver, as has recently been rumored, to reduce production costs.
Despite Supergirl‘s ratings landing it as CBS’ top new drama and fourth highest-rated series on the network, THR states, “CBS ultimately decided that Supergirl‘s ratings, even with a reduced licensing fee, did not justify a second season.”
However, Deadline reported a week ago that “there already has been incoming interest by multiple networks and digital platforms inquiring about picking up the show should CBS cancel it,” with The CW being the most promising suitor — meaning the move should not come as a surprise. Hulu was also mentioned as a possible destination for the series.
Moreover, when news of a potential move to Vancouver was first announced, it was revealed that “many [cast members] are not thrilled about the potential move,” particularly Calista Flockhart, but Warner Bros. TV, which owns the series, was adamant about cutting costs. Flockhart has reportedly agreed to make the move after all.
Rumors have been swirling lately about Supergirl‘s fate, including a potential move to The CW, which is the home of the other Greg Berlanti-produced DC Comics series, Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. Supergirl featured a crossover with The Flash, as Grant Gustin appeared as the Scarlet Speedster in National City. It was established that Kara’s Earth is one of the many of the multiverse, which Barry is able to travel between with his speed.
This move seems to make monetary, logistical and creative sense. Plus, The CW already targets the younger demographic that Supergirl skews toward, making it a natural fit for the network.
According to a tweet by actor David Harewood, the season 2 will get a 22-episode order, though that raises the question of where in The CW’s already-packed schedule it will air. (The CW renewed 11 series earlier this year).
