Henry Czerny will play Winslow Schott, aka Toyman, on Supergirl.
Czerny has currently been booked in a single episode guest starring role as Winslow Schott, Sr., reports ComicBook.com.
Warner Bros. describes the character as “a mad criminal genius known as Toyman — and Winn’s estranged father. Toyman weaponizes toys to wreak destruction and revenge but is ultimately driven by one thing — the obsessive desire to reunite with his beloved son.”
When Jeremy Jordan was cast as Winslow “Winn” Schott, many fans wondered if the character was destined for a villainous fate. However, now we know the villain is actually his father.
In the DC Comics, Winslow Schott was a child genius who grew up to become a world-renowned toy maker. However, when LexCorp bought his company, he was left jobless and bitter due to LexCorp’s use of his work as weapons. This pushed him to become Toyman and seek revenge against Lex Luthor. After several skirmishes with Luthor and Superman, he was eventually arrested.
After escaping prison — and here’s the Supergirl connection — Schott kidnapped several children in Metropolis, including Cat Grant’s son, Adam (who has already been cast). Adam attempted to help free the others, but failed and Toyman killed them all. Though Superman caught him, Cat Grant considered killing him while he was in prison.
Also worth noting, in the comics, Toyman has a son, but the son is named Anton. Interestingly, Toyman’s son became the Dollmaker in the comics, a name given to a serial killer in Arrow season 2. Anton also has a connection to Supergirl and Cat Grant, as he heard about her son’s death at his father’s hands. He eventually kidnapped Cat Grant and wanted to become her son. Cat rejected him, and Supergirl arrived to save her.
We’d be surprised if the show takes such dark turns, but the connections are definitely interesting.
Besides Revenge, Czerny’s many credits include Mission: Impossible, Falling Skies and The Tudors.
Supergirl premieres tonight at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
